For decades, California smog has been almost as recognizable as the Hollywood sign and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Photos from the 1950s show pollution so dense that the tops of skyscrapers are obscured, and like weather forecasts, smog alert forecasts and “moderate eye irritation” warnings were offered to help the public protect themselves, the Los Angeles Times reported.
At one point, the air pollution was so bad that motorcyclists working for the design firm donned gas masks from a military surplus store to fight “the smog that was so thick they couldn’t see it,” the Times said.
“The masks worked too, the men said, making it possible to see and breathe more pleasantly,” the report added.
However, modern Californians do not struggle with the same levels of air pollution. So what has changed?
While gas masks were a short-term solution, the federal government stepped in to help with the Air Pollution Control Act of 1955 and then the Clean Air Act in 1963.
With Washington’s support, the Environmental Protection Agency began tracking smog and enforcing environmental laws, which had a significant impact.
Beginning in the 1970s (and despite several setbacks), air pollution levels began to decline in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and elsewhere in California and the Southwest.
Over the three decades, levels have fallen below the national standard of 9ppm across the region.
Even for a few cities with spikes in air pollution, all areas measured remain well below the national standard since 2002, the EPA chart shows.
While recent transplants to Los Angeles may not have realized it, longtime Angelenos noted in Reddit r / LosAngeles that they had seen a drastic change in air quality over the course of their lives.
One Redditor, ranchoparksteve, said they had moved to the area since 1990 and worked in a skyscraper in downtown Los Angeles.
“The smog layer was obvious and nasty. The difference is amazing, ”wrote ranchoparksteve.
Another user, Khowdung-Flunghi, said he moved to SoCal in 1977 and arrived in “glowing orange” air, and part of their job in Pasadena was to track a smog alert each day.
“Trust me, it’s just so much better,” they wrote. “Not perfect, but in retrospect it is a huge positive change. I had to see it with my own eyes – maybe there is hope for the future after all… go on! “
