Bus in California goes off highway and crashes, injuring 24

TULARE, CA – A bus from Los Angeles to Fresno crashed after exiting the freeway, punctured a mesh fence and pulled to its side in a parking lot, injuring 24 people, authorities said Thursday.

The Greyhound bus driver was seriously injured in a pre-dawn accident near the city of Tulare and was hospitalized, and the injured passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries, California road patrol officer Steve Beal said. Several injured passengers were taken to hospitals.

Authorities investigated the cause of the accident on California State Route 99. Beal said the bus driver had tested negative for drunk driving.

Beal said the bus stopped in Bakersfield before it crashed about 8 kilometers north of Tulare. Another Greyhound bus took healthy passengers to their destination.

Greyhound said in a statement that he was saddened by the disaster.

“Our primary concern at the moment is to continue to support our customers and drivers,” the statement said.
