SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – California is known as a leader in agriculture, but did you know that the state almost exclusively grows certain crops?

A report by the California Department of Food and Agriculture shows that California farmers are the “sole producer” of more than a dozen commodities in the United States. Some of these, such as almonds, may not come as a shock.

Others, like garlic and figs, may surprise more people.

According to the CDFA, California produces 99% or more of the supply of these crops.

California is the “sole producer” of these goods, but the state leads the nation in many other categories — well over 50.

In terms of exports, several commodities grown almost exclusively in California are particularly valuable. Almonds were at the top of the list in 2020. As the next commodity, dairy and produce, this category brought in more than double the money.

Pistachios were third on the list, followed by walnuts, wine and rice.

Almonds, pistachios and walnuts were the top exports in 2020 to California’s largest agricultural export market: the European Union. These three exports were also the leading products in the United Arab Emirates, California’s seventh largest export market.

Almonds are grown in different parts of California, but Fresno County leads the way in production, accounting for 18.1% of the state’s total production in 2020. Kern County had the second largest increase, accounting for 16.7% of the state’s total.

However, more pistachios are grown in Kern County. It grew 35.7% of the state’s pistachios and 26.8% in Fresno County.
