A driver crashed into a group of law enforcement recruits while they were training in Southern California early Wednesday. Authorities said 25 people, including the driver, were injured in the crash and five conscripts were in critical condition.
The driver, identified as a 22-year-old man from Diamond Bar, Calif., went the wrong way on the road and struck a class of recruits who were running in formation, officials said at a news conference Wednesday.
The driver performed a field sobriety test and “blew 0.0 on the breathalyzer,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.
“So, the cause of the accident, the motive, whatever, is unknown at this time,” he said.
Paramedics set up a triage area at the scene and transported the injured to seven hospitals for treatment.
“There are red, yellow and green tarps that first responders use to categorize victims,” Ret. Fire Chief Rick Godinez of the Los Angeles City Fire Department told CBS Los Angeles on Wednesday morning.
A total of 75 recruits from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and various agencies ran near the Sheriff’s Training Academy in the Whittier area. Those at the front of the formation could see the oncoming vehicle and were able to pull over, while those at the back could not see and took the brunt of the collision, Villanueva said.
A CBS Los Angeles helicopter showed a large police and fire response and a vehicle on the sidewalk.
The investigation is ongoing, and the driver has been detained.
