Newsom Says California Will ‘Breach’ Amid Flood Of Illegal Immigrants After Title 42 Passes

Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom of California warned Monday that President Biden’s plan to reverse former President Donald Trump’s border policies could “break” the state.

The Biden administration plans to lift the Trump-era Title 42 policy, which allows police and border officials to expedite the deportation of illegal immigrants.

Newsom, speaking to ABC News on Monday, said, “The reality is, what we have now is not working and is going to break down in the post-42 world unless we take responsibility and ownership.”

“I say that as a father,” added the governor. “I say that as someone who feels responsible to be part of the solution and I’m trying to do my best here.”

Newsom said the US government is sending “more and more” migrants to California because the state “takes care of people.”

“The more we do, the burden is placed disproportionately on us,” he said.

“We already have capacity at nine of our sites,” Newsom said. “We can’t continue to finance all these sites because of the budget pressures now placed in this state and the compensatory issues that I have to deal with.… The reality is, unless we do what we’re doing, people will end up on the street.”

Newsom’s comments came as a surprise after years of championing policies to accommodate and extend protections to illegal migrants entering California.

About 22% of California’s nearly 11 million immigrants are in the United States illegally, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.

In September, Newsom signed a bill allowing illegal immigrants to obtain state ID cards, saying, “We are a refugee state – a majority-minority state, where 27% of us are immigrants.”

In January, Newsom unveiled his 2022-23 California budget plan, which includes universal health care benefits for all low-income residents, including illegal immigrants.
