A massive sinkhole that completely separated a two-lane road in San Joaquin, California, has now swallowed three separate vehicles despite the hole being clearly marked, authorities say.
The sinkhole erupted earlier this month when the California Highway Patrol said a threatened retention pond was causing the road to erode. In the video from January 17, water seeps through the roadway and cleans the material under the pavement.
But just hours after the highway patrol announced unsafe conditions and posted “road closed” and “flooded” signs nearby, a car drove straight through a flooded area on Kasson Road. Photos of the initial incident show the car overturned as it began to fall down the road.
The next day, the road completely collapsed, officials announced on Facebook, saying people should not try to move around the barricades and warning that the site would be “closed for an extended period of time.”
Despite constant closure warnings and a huge hole in the roadway about a car wide, another vehicle ended up on the collapsed roadway about a week later.
“THIS CAN’T BE REAL!” The California Highway Patrol posted photos of the incident on Facebook. “We are at a loss for words. If only there were signs and/or barriers to prevent this.”
Even the law enforcement agency was seemingly surprised when it “happened again” on Saturday, despite the concrete barriers that had been put in place since the original collapse.
This time, the four-door pickup ended up in a hole with the front completely crushed and the airbags deployed. Police said the driver of this vehicle was issued a warrant for the incident.
“We can’t make this up,” the highway patrol said. “This was 100 percent preventable. There are no excuses. The signs are clear, visible and unobstructed.”
It happened again. We can’t make these things up.

Netomie Cardoza, who lives at the San Joaquin River Club next to the sinkhole, said they heard “this big crunching sound” when the incident happened.
“We look out the window and, ‘uh oh,’ that’s another one,” Cardoza told CBS Sacramento. “I don’t know. It’s funny because it’s a big giant barrier and they were going around it.”
The sinkhole is expected to be repaired in a few weeks, according to CBS Sacramento.

On a hot summer’s day, there is no more inviting sight than a lake full of water, and luckily Lake Berryessa is a great place to swim. Summer water temperatures can exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. From waders to competitive swimmers, everyone can find a way to enjoy a day on the water.
How deep is the hole in Lake Berryessa?
If water levels in Lake Berryessa Reservoir at the top of Monticello Dam rise too high, the excess water begins to swirl into a large hole, seemingly cut into the surface of the lake. Affectionately known by locals as the ‘Glory Hole’, the hole is not actually the mouth of hell, although the vortex sure looks like it.

First he would get wet. Then they would probably hit you. Then, without any safety equipment installed in the spillway, you’d probably end up getting chewed up—by rocks or machinery, depending on whether it’s a natural or man-made spillway—and then you’d most likely die.

This is ‘The Glory Hole’ at Lake Berryessa. Officially, its name is the ‘Morning Glory Spillway’, as the hole is actually a unique spillway for Monticello Lake and Dam. When the water level rises above 440 feet, the water begins to pour down the hole into Putah Creek, hundreds of feet below.
What is under Lake Berryessa?
What is the mysterious hole of Lake Berryessa? Lake Berryessa ‘Glory Hole’ According to Visit Napa Valley, it’s essentially a giant concrete funnel sticking out of the dam, 75 feet in diameter at the top and 28 feet at the base. When Berryessa’s surface level rises to 440 feet above sea level (near the dam’s spillway), it also includes a funnel.
What caused the hole in Lake Berryessa?
Beneath the waters of Lake Berryessa lies the flooded town of Monticello. The people, and at least 300 graves, were moved out in 1956. Then construction workers stopped diverting the water and raised the Glory Hole to an elevation of 440 feet.

What happens if you fall in a reservoir?
Washbasin. Third, a stilling basin at the end of the spillway serves to further dissipate energy and prevent erosion. They are usually filled with a relatively shallow depth of water and sometimes lined with concrete.
What happens if you fall in a spillway?
Temperatures in the reservoirs rarely exceed 12°C, even in summer. That’s cold enough to ‘hold your breath’, numb your hands and feet and cause hypothermia. Reservoirs are often deceptively deep, with sudden drops that cannot be seen. Under the surface there may be hidden currents from water pipes.

What is a plug hole in a reservoir?
“If someone fell in, they would be seriously injured,” the spokeswoman said. “They would also find themselves stuck as the access to the river is barred so they would need a professional rescue team to get them out.”
What would happen if you fell into a reservoir?
Plugs regulate water levels in the tank by draining excess water when it overflows. The water is then piped to the River Derwent through tunnels. The spillways originally had walkways around them, but they were dismantled many years ago.
What happens if you go over a dam?
The reservoir temperature is also rarely above 10°C even in the summer months. This is cold enough to send a person into cold water shock – even in the height of summer. It causes you to inhale as you go underwater, due to an involuntary gasp reflex, and drown without resurfacing.
Can a boat go over a dam?
Water conditions near the dam Above the dam, the current can pull swimmers in and drag them below the water level with such force that they cannot escape. Below the dam, the air trapped in the water reduces your buoyancy to the point where even if you are wearing a personal flotation device you can sink below the surface of the water.
What are the dangers of going over a dam?
Fishing and boating immediately above and below any dam can be dangerous and should be avoided due to the many hazards that are present. Above the dam may represent rapid movement of water and current due to flood control or recent weather conditions.
What is at the bottom of a spillway?
Below the surface, water falling over the dam creates highly aerated, circulating currents that trap people and objects underwater against the face of the dam. These forces are a virtually unavoidable trap for even the strongest swimmers wearing life jackets or often in boats and kayaks.

What’s at the bottom of a reservoir?
There are four main components of a spillway: The spillway elements are the inlet, the vertical part of the curve (ogee curve), the steep slope channel, and the outlet. To avoid hydraulic jump, the slope of the spillway must be steep enough for the flow to remain supercritical.
What is at the bottom of a spillway?
The water in the reservoirs is very calm. Because of this, bits of sand, rocks, dirt, and other material, called sediment, sink to the bottom, leaving the water fairly clear. But over time, this sediment accumulates, which greatly reduces the total amount of water in the reservoir.

What are the parts of a spillway?
What is at the bottom of the topping? When the reservoir level rises above the top of the spillway, water flows over its sides and down into the shaft. At the bottom of the shaft, it enters the tunnel. The tunnel usually passes under the dam and diverts the water to join the river downstream.
