A spokesman for California crime victims says Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon “supports offenders and criminals” with a recent directive.

Her comments come after sources told Fox News that the probation unit, also known as the “Lifer Unit”, is set to be disbanded by the end of 2022. The office focuses on notifying victims and their family members of information related to their assailant’s probation.

Gascon’s office said in a statement to Fox News that the warnings could be “triggering” for victims and said it was taking resources from the district attorney’s office. He also said the alerts should be the responsibility of the California Department of Corrections.

“Although a victim has the right to be notified, they also have the right NOT to be contacted,” Gascon’s office said. “Attorneys at the probation unit have used quotation service representatives, legal assistants and resources from the Bureau of Investigation to contact victims and their relatives who have not asked to be notified of probation.”

Gascon’s office also said lawyers in the unit are “needed in line operations to prosecute cases since we are severely understaffed.”

Patricia Wenskunas, founder and CEO of Crime Survivors Inc., a California-based organization focused on helping victims of violent crime and their family members, friends and loved ones, told Fox News Digital that the move was “shocking”.

“It is shocking to me that a person who is to be the district attorney, not the public defenders, the district attorney is meant to be there to support victims, to provide, you know, balance the scale of justice, to provide support and guidance, to be able to “And he is not even willing to do that. And in all honesty, is to revictimizing victims and their loved ones,” said Wenskunas.

Wenskunas added that it does not seem that Gascon is “rational” and said that he does not help the victims.

“It does not seem like [Gascon is] rational. It does not seem like he even realizes it because I think he thinks he is recording his supporters and followers,” said Wenskunas. “He goes against any support that the victims deserve and should have. And he supports criminals and criminals.”
