SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) — California police have launched an investigation into the discovery of a car found buried in the yard of a Silicon Valley mansion.
Landscapers working on the property discovered the car Thursday morning, police said. Officials responded to the home in the town of Atherton after receiving reports of the strange discovery just before 9am, the Atherton Police Department wrote in a news release Thursday.
Police also used cadaver dogs, according to the press release, which suggested a “slight” possibility of human remains inside the vehicle.
Investigators had not found any human remains as of Thursday evening, but did discover “unused concrete bags throughout the vehicle,” police said.
The car is believed to have been buried sometime in the 1990s before the current homeowner moved into the home, police said. The homeowner is not under investigation, the Associated Press reported, citing the Atherton Police Chief. Daniel Larsen.
Criminal police technicians were still busy recovering the vehicle from the ground as of Thursday evening.
A representative from Atherton Police was not immediately available on Friday morning to share any news.
Atherton is one of the wealthiest cities in the US, with a population of about 7,000 in an area of nearly 5 square miles, the AP reported.
