We have our first (and probably only) poll of California voters ahead of the June 7 primary, and it’s great news for Governor Gavin Newsom, Senator Alex Padilla and Attorney General Rob Bonta, the three incumbents in the three highest positions in the state. -profile races.
Under California primary rules, the top two vote-getting candidates, regardless of political party, will advance to the general election. Newsom will undoubtedly finish first in the gubernatorial race, so the only question that remains is whether his November opponent will be state GOP-backed Republican state Sen. Brian Dahle, or author Michael Shellenberger, a candidate. no party preference.
As we wrote earlier this week, if Dahle advances, the general election is not likely to be competitive no matter how big the “red wave” is nationally. Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1 in California, and the national GOP is toxic to most California Democrats. In the last big red wave year (2010), former Governor Jerry Brown easily defeated Republican Meg Whitman in the general election, and California has since become more Democratic.
Newsom clearly prefers to run against Dahle who is running ads that boost Dahle’s name recognition, and the Berkeley Institute for Government Studies poll showed the governor has a good chance of getting his wish by running against the Republican. The poll found Newsom in the lead with 50% support, Dahle in second with 10% support and Shellenberger in third with 5% support. Nineteen percent of those surveyed endorsed other candidates on the ticket, with none gaining more than 3% support. Sixteen percent of those surveyed said they were undecided.
If the poll results are accurate, Shellenberger will need to win over a large share of the remaining undecided voters if he is to advance. The poll found that 9% of Democrats, 24% of Republicans and 16% of independents were undecided, so that’s the well Shellenberger must draw from.
Dahle’s breakthrough likely wasn’t the only piece of good news for Newsom. While Shellenberger, without the albatross of an “R” next to his name on the ballot, makes him a more challenging opponent for Newsom than Dahle would be, the poll suggests Newsom may not need to sweat the author too much. .
The poll found that Newsom has the support of 83% of California Democrats and 46% of independents. If Shellenberger wants to dethrone Newsom, he’ll need to take down both figures. It’s not an impossible task for Shellenberger, but Newsom is clearly popular with most California Democrats and will have a huge fundraising advantage over whoever his opponent is in the general election.
In addition to the gubernatorial race, the poll brought good news for Padilla in the Senate race and Bonta in the attorney general race.
The poll found that Padilla will likely face Republican Mark Meuser in the general election. For the same reasons Newsom is almost certain to beat Dahle, Padilla is almost certain to beat Meuser.
In the race for attorney general, Bonta supporters have been running ads boosting pro-Trump Republican Eric Early, and it looks like that strategy will succeed. Bonta leads with 46% support and is followed by Early with 16% support, CAGOP-backed Nathan Hochman with 12% and no party preference candidate Anne Marie Schubert with 6%.
Schubert, the well-funded Sacramento County district attorney, could have been a formidable opponent for Bonta given poll numbers showing voter dissatisfaction with crime.
